Collecting your pet — from home or your vet
One of the first practical questions is how your pet gets from where they are to an aftercare provider. You can arrange it directly or through your vet, and your pet can be collected from home, from the clinic, or dropped off by you. Here is how each works.

Both are common in New Zealand. Neither is more “correct” — it comes down to what feels simplest for you.
Arrange through your vet
Many families let their vet clinic handle it. The clinic passes your pet to a crematorium it works with, and can often hold your pet until then. Ashes usually come back to you through the clinic. The clinic is the intermediary — the aftercare provider is the crematorium behind it.
Arrange directly with a provider
You can also contact a pet cremation or aquamation provider yourself. You choose the cremation type, whether ashes are returned and how your pet is collected, and you deal with one business from start to finish.
