How Final Tail researches providers

We list 1,225 providers across three countries. This page explains exactly how that information is put together, what we stand behind, and what we do not. If we cannot back something up, we say so rather than rounding it up into a claim.

Discovery

How a provider gets onto Final Tail

  1. 1

    We find them

From public sources: a provider's own website, public business listings, industry association member lists, veterinary practice referrals published online, and provider networks that list their own locations. We also receive submissions from providers and from families.

  2. 2

We check them against their own sources

Every field we publish is recorded from something we can point at, usually the provider's own website. Where a provider states a service, a collection option or a price, we record it and record where we found it.

  3. 3

    We cross-check the ambiguous ones

Where a provider's own pages disagree with each other, or where a listing looks like a reseller rather than a crematorium, the row is held for review rather than published. Some never make it onto the site.

  4. 4

    We date it

Every listing carries the date we last reviewed it. That date is a research fact, not a guarantee about today.

Scope

What we check, and what we do not

What we check

  • That the business exists and is reachable, from its own website or its own public listing.
  • The name, location and contact details we publish, against the provider's own sources.
  • Which services the provider itself states it offers, recorded field by field.
  • Any starting price the provider publishes, recorded with the page we found it on.
  • That the provider is a pet aftercare business, not a general business we have mistaken for one.

What we do not check

  • Quality of service. We do not inspect facilities, audit processes or assess how a family was treated.
  • Licensing, registration or accreditation status. Where a provider states one, that is their claim, not our verification.
  • Whether a published price is still current today. Prices change between our checks.
  • Whether a provider will accept your particular case. Capacity, species and distance all vary.
  • Anything a provider has not stated. A blank field is a gap in our research, not a finding.

Policies

The rules we hold ourselves to

Each of these is enforced in code and checked by an automated test, not left to editorial care.

Unknown never becomes no

Our provider records store each capability as a flag with four states: yes, no, via a partner, or unknown. An unknown renders as "Not confirmed" everywhere on the site, including in the comparison table. It is never displayed as "No", and no page counts an unknown as a negative.

A crematorium whose website does not mention aquamation shows "Not confirmed" for aquamation, not "No". They may well offer it.

Pricing is recorded, not calculated

Where a provider publishes a starting price, we record the figure and the page it came from. We never estimate a provider's price, never adjust one for inflation, and never present a national average as though it were a provider's price.

247 of 1225 providers publish a starting price. The other 978 show nothing, which says nothing about whether they are expensive.

Physical distance is not service coverage

A provider appears for an area when their own stated service area covers it, or when we are showing them explicitly as a nearby option with the distance labelled. We never infer that a provider serves an area because their office happens to be close to it.

A crematorium eight miles away that only collects from veterinary practices in another county does not serve you. A provider fifty miles away that collects nationally might.

An office postcode is not a service area

Several providers in our data are registered at an office, a partner site or a head office that is nowhere near where they actually operate. We treat the address as an address and the service area as a separate, separately sourced field.

A national network's registered head office tells you nothing about which of its sites would collect your pet.

National networks are labelled as networks

Where a provider operates across a whole country, we label it as a nationwide network rather than pinning it to one town. Where several brands are commonly owned, we do not present them as independent alternatives without saying so.

A network's listing reads as a network, so a family comparing three of them can see they may be comparing one company.

Staleness is shown, not hidden

Every listing shows when we last checked it. An older date is not hidden and does not remove the listing: an accurate old record is more useful than no record. It is also why every page tells you to confirm directly.

Last checked is a research date. It is not a statement that the information is correct today.

Listing completeness measures us, not the provider

Where we show listing completeness, it counts how many of 16 tracked details we hold. It is a measure of our research, and it is never combined with anything else into a score.

A small family crematorium with an excellent service and a sparse website scores lower than a large network with a detailed one. That is a fact about our data, not about them.

No ratings, no rankings, no scores

We publish no star ratings, no review counts, no numbered rankings and no best-provider claims. Ordering on a page is by relevance to the location or by a stated, visible rule, never by a hidden quality judgement.

The comparison tool has no row that ranks one provider above another. There is nothing to game.

Paid placement

What would change if a provider paid us

Nothing on Final Tail is paid placement today. Not one listing, not one position, not one page. We are writing the rules down now, before the first sale, because a rule written afterwards is a rule written to fit what already happened.

  • Any sponsored placement is labelled as sponsored, on the page, in text, next to the listing.
  • It is limited to an agreed locality. There is no site-wide buy.
  • It is excluded from structured data that would imply an organic ranking.
  • It never produces a best or recommended claim, because we do not make those.
  • It is never blended into listing completeness or any other research signal.
  • Paying changes presentation. It does not change a single recorded fact about a provider.
  • We can decline or edit a claim we cannot support, whether or not it is paid for.
  • This section is updated before any paid placement goes live, not after.

Corrections

Telling us something is wrong

We would rather hear from you than keep something wrong on the page. Corrections are free, they do not require you to claim a listing, and you do not have to be the business owner to send one. We ask for a source we can check, because that is what lets us act on it rather than sit on it.

  • A provider has closed
  • The pricing is wrong or out of date
  • The services listed are wrong
  • The contact details are wrong
  • The location or service area is wrong

Questions

Common questions

Do you verify every provider?

No, and we will not claim to. We check that a business exists and that the details we publish match its own public information. We do not inspect premises, audit processes or assess service quality. Anyone who tells you they have verified a thousand crematoria is describing something they have not done.

Why does a listing say Not confirmed instead of No?

Because they mean different things. Not confirmed means we have not recorded an answer for that field. It does not mean the provider does not offer the service. Collapsing the two would let our research gaps read as facts about a business, which would be unfair to the provider and misleading to you.

How do you decide which providers appear for my area?

From what the provider says about the areas it serves, not from how far away it is. A crematorium eight miles from you that only collects from veterinary practices in another county does not serve you, and a provider fifty miles away that collects nationally might. Distance is shown as context, never as coverage.

Do providers pay to be listed?

No. Every listing on Final Tail today is unpaid and there is no paid placement anywhere on the site. If that ever changes, sponsored placements will be labelled on the page, limited to an agreed locality, excluded from structured data that implies organic ranking, and disclosed here.

Why are there no star ratings?

Because we have no evidence that would support one. A rating on a directory is usually scraped from somewhere else or invented, and neither belongs on a page someone reads on the worst day of their year. We show what each provider's own information confirms, and when we last checked it.

A listing about my business is wrong. How do I fix it?

Send us a correction with a source we can check, and we will update it. It is free, it does not require you to claim the listing, and we would rather hear from you than keep something wrong on the page.

Final Tail is an independent directory of pet cremation and aftercare providers across Australia. We collect provider details from public listings, provider websites and information shared with us. Services, availability and pricing may change, so please confirm directly with the provider before making arrangements.
