Global State of Pet Aftercare 2026

Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States compared

The same measures, computed the same way, across three markets. Derived at build time from Final Tail's own directory of pet cremation and aftercare providers. Every rate is a floor: it counts providers whose own public information confirms a service, and never infers one from silence.

Executive findings

Six comparative findings. Each carries the figure it leads with, the three market rates behind it, what it means for a family arranging aftercare, and the caveat it must travel with.

A comparable starting price is the exception in every market

29% publish any pricing signal at all

Australia: 24% (24 of 98) · United Kingdom: 38% (83 of 218) · United States: 15% (140 of 909)

Expect to ring round rather than to shop from a page. Ask for the total in writing, itemised, before you agree to anything, because the figure a provider publishes is rarely the figure you end up paying.

Caveat: This counts a recorded from-price, which is stricter than 'mentions pricing somewhere'. A provider that quotes readily on the phone and publishes nothing counts as not published here.

Price disclosure varies by 23 percentage points between the three markets

15–38% publish a comparable starting price

Australia: 24% (24 of 98) · United Kingdom: 38% (83 of 218) · United States: 15% (140 of 909)

How much homework you can do before picking up the phone genuinely depends on which country you are in. The same search behaves differently in Sydney, Bristol and Denver.

Caveat: Some of this gap is our research depth rather than the market. Coverage differs by how long we have been researching each country, and we say so beside every cross-market figure.

Ashes return is the most consistently published fact in pet aftercare

71% confirm that ashes are returned

Australia: 89% (87 of 98) · United Kingdom: 93% (203 of 218) · United States: 64% (584 of 909)

It is the one thing providers reliably state, which makes it the wrong thing to spend your questions on. Spend them on what the provider means by private, and on what is included in the price.

Caveat: Confirming that ashes are returned says nothing about which cremation type is required to get them back, and nothing about how the provider keeps track of whose ashes are whose.

Aquamation is a genuinely different proposition in each market

0–12% confirm aquamation or water cremation

Australia: 10% (10 of 98) · United Kingdom: 0% (0 of 218) · United States: 12% (106 of 909)

If water cremation matters to you, availability is the first thing to check rather than the last. In the thinner markets it may mean travelling, or it may not be available near you at all.

Caveat: Positive-only: a provider counts where its own public information confirms the service. Silence is recorded as not confirmed, never as unavailable, so every figure here is a floor.

At-home euthanasia is published far more often in some markets than others

10–11% confirm at-home euthanasia, or a partnership offering it

Australia: 11% (11 of 98) · United Kingdom: 10% (21 of 218) · United States: 11% (103 of 909)

This is an earlier decision than cremation and is usually a separate business. Where the confirmed rate is low, ask your vet as well as the aftercare provider.

Caveat: Final Tail does not advise on euthanasia and records only whether a provider states it offers or arranges it. Many providers who arrange it through a partner do not say so publicly.

Horse and large-animal aftercare is a specialist service everywhere

9% · 19% · 10% confirm horses or large animals, AU · UK · US

Australia: 9% (9 of 98) · United Kingdom: 19% (41 of 218) · United States: 10% (92 of 909)

Assume you will need to search specifically and to travel. Size drives transport, chamber capacity and price, so this is one of the few cases where the nearest provider is often not an option at all.

Caveat: Counted where a provider's own species flag or its own pet-types text names horses or equines. It is not an estimate of how many could take a horse if asked.

Confirmed service signals

The share of each market's recorded providers whose own public information confirms a service. Read every figure as a floor: it measures publication, not availability.

“Largest area” is the area with the most recorded providers. It is an entry point into the directory, not a ranking of markets or of providers, and it reflects our coverage rather than a measured provider density.

Methodology

Every figure is recomputed from Final Tail’s live provider dataset at build time. Nothing is hardcoded, so a number cannot outlive the data it describes, and the downloadable CSV is generated from the same computation as these tables. A provider is counted as confirming a service only where its own public information establishes it; we never infer a service from a category, a name, or what similar providers offer. Providers enter the directory only after first-party verification against the provider’s own website or another acceptable first-party source, and no competitor-sourced field appears in any figure here.

This is a snapshot of Final Tail's own directory on the date shown, not a census of every provider in any market. Every figure describes the providers we have recorded and what their own public information confirms. A blank field means we have not recorded an answer, never that the answer is no.

Limitations

  • These are not market totals. Final Tail's directory is not a complete register of pet aftercare providers in Australia, the United Kingdom or the United States, and no figure here should be read as one.
  • There are no trends. Final Tail holds one current snapshot rather than a series of historical ones, so this edition reports levels only. We would rather publish no trend than an unsupported one.
  • A confirmed rate measures what providers PUBLISH, not what they offer. A provider that offers a service but does not say so publicly counts as not confirmed, so every confirmation rate is a floor rather than an estimate of true availability.
  • Coverage differs by market and by how long we have been researching each one, so a difference between two markets may reflect our research depth rather than the market itself. Where that is a real risk, the report says so beside the figure.
  • No provider data in this report came from a competitor directory. Providers are added only after first-party verification against the provider's own website or another acceptable first-party source.

Global State of Pet Aftercare 2026

Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States compared.

The one thing three separate market reports cannot give you: the same measures, computed the same way, across all three markets at once. Derived at build time from Final Tail’s directory of 1,225 providers.

Executive findings

Six comparisons that only exist because the three markets are measured the same way. Each carries the figure it leads with, the three market rates behind it, what it means in practice, and the caveat it has to travel with.

  1. A comparable starting price is the exception in every market

This is an earlier decision than cremation and is usually a separate business. Where the confirmed rate is low, ask your vet as well as the aftercare provider.

Caveat. Final Tail does not advise on euthanasia and records only whether a provider states it offers or arranges it. Many providers who arrange it through a partner do not say so publicly.

Price disclosure, compared

The clearest cross-market difference in the dataset, and the one that most changes what a family can do before they pick up the phone.

Service confirmation, compared

The core services every market offers, and how consistently providers in each market say so publicly.

Aquamation, at-home euthanasia and large animals

The three services where market differences are large enough to change what is practically available to a family, rather than merely how often it is mentioned.

Provider distribution, compared

How much of each market is businesses with a listed address, and how much is services that operate across the whole country with no single location.

Listing completeness, compared

How much of a provider’s basic record we could establish from public sources. This measures Final Tail’s coverage as much as the market’s transparency, and both readings are legitimate.

Geographic access, compared

The top-level unit differs by market, so this is a comparison of coverage and of access, never a like-for-like density measure.

Methodology and limitations

Every figure on this page is recomputed from Final Tail’s live provider dataset at build time. Nothing is hardcoded, so a number here cannot outlive the data it describes, and the downloadable CSV is generated from the same computation as the tables above. Each chart and its table are built from the same object, so they cannot disagree.

A provider is counted as confirming a service only where its own public information establishes it. We do not infer a service from a provider’s category, from its name, or from what similar providers offer. A blank is recorded as not confirmed and is never converted into a negative claim about that business.

Providers enter the directory only after first-party verification against the provider’s own website or another acceptable first-party source. No provider in this dataset was added on the strength of a competitor directory listing, and no competitor-sourced field appears in any figure here.

Press and research hub

Final Tail is an independent directory of pet cremation and aftercare providers across Australia. We collect provider details from public listings, provider websites and information shared with us. Services, availability and pricing may change, so please confirm directly with the provider before making arrangements.
