The method
How the groups are decided
Physical proximity and service coverage are different facts, and blurring them is the most common failure in a directory search. A list sorted purely by distance quietly suggests that the closest business will come to you, which is not something a distance can establish. So results are grouped by what the evidence actually supports, and each group says what membership does and does not prove.

The provider's own listed address is in the place you searched. For a postcode search this is an exact match on the postcode the provider itself publishes.

The provider's own published service area names that place. We record the claim and attribute it to them; we do not independently verify that they will cover a specific address.

The provider's office falls inside the distance you chose. Straight-line proximity only, and the group is labelled to say exactly that.

Each market uses its own official open government geography, and each one has real limits we would rather state than paper over.

What it cannot tell you
- An ABS Postal Area is a STATISTICAL APPROXIMATION of a postcode, built by aggregating Mesh Blocks. It is not an Australia Post delivery boundary and the two do not always agree.
- Some Australia Post postcodes (PO Box only ranges, and some LVR/large-volume-receiver codes) have no POA at all, so a small number of valid postcodes cannot be anchored. The tool says so rather than guessing.
- The centroid of a large rural POA can sit a long way from the town a person means.

What it cannot tell you
- This is DISTRICT-level, not unit-level. 'SW1A 1AA' and 'SW1A 2AA' resolve to the same district anchor. That is deliberate: a unit-level registry would mean committing ~2.7 million rows for no gain in a radius search that is explicitly approximate.
- The anchor is the mean of the district's live postcode centroids, so an unusually shaped district pulls its anchor toward wherever its postcodes are densest.
- Terminated postcodes are excluded, so a district that no longer exists cannot anchor a search.
- Northern Ireland is included (BT districts), and the Great Britain / Northern Ireland water gap means a straight-line distance across the Irish Sea is not a usable travel distance. The search applies the same land-mass rule the UK locality pages already use.

What it cannot tell you
- A ZCTA APPROXIMATES the area of a USPS ZIP Code. It is not a USPS delivery definition, and USPS does not publish ZIP boundaries at all.
- Some ZIP Codes are point or PO-Box-only codes with no ZCTA, so a small number of valid ZIPs cannot be anchored. The tool says so rather than guessing.
- The internal point is a representative point inside the area, not a population-weighted centre and not a street address.

Common questions
Does a nearby provider mean they will collect from my address?
No, and this is the single most important thing to understand about any distance based search. A distance tells you how far a provider's own listed address is from the place you entered, in a straight line. It says nothing about whether they travel to you, what they charge to do so, or whether they are taking bookings this week. That is why we keep providers who explicitly say they serve an area in their own separate group, and why every nearby result carries the caveat rather than hiding it in a footer.
How accurate is a postcode or ZIP search?
It is an approximate anchor, not your address. In Australia we use the centre of the ABS Postal Area, which is a statistical approximation of a postcode rather than an Australia Post delivery boundary. In the UK we use the centre of the postcode district, so SW1A 1AA and SW1A 2AA share one anchor. In the United States we use the internal point of the Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area, which approximates a ZIP because the Postal Service does not publish ZIP boundaries at all. Do you rank providers, or charge them to appear higher?
No. There is no paid placement in these results, no star rating, no review count and no score. Within a group, providers are ordered by distance where we have a distance and alphabetically where we do not. Final Tail does not rate or rank providers anywhere on the site.
Is my location or search stored?
No. There is no account, no saved search history and no device or IP geolocation. The place you type is used to answer the request and is not written anywhere. Our analytics record only which market you searched, whether the input was a postcode or a place name, and banded versions of the radius and the number of results. The postcode itself, the place name and any coordinate are never sent.
Why can you not find my postcode?
Some postcodes and ZIP codes have no published area at all. Australian PO Box ranges and large volume receiver codes, and United States point or PO Box only ZIPs, exist for delivery but have no official statistical area, so there is nothing defensible to place them at. Rather than guess a location, we say we cannot place it and suggest searching by town or suburb name instead.
Why are there no separate pages for each postcode?
Because they would be pages built for a search engine rather than for a person. A postcode page would repeat the same providers a town page already covers, and there are thousands of them. Final Tail publishes location pages only where there is genuine local coverage to write about, and this tool is the way to search everything else.
