Will I get my pet's ashes back after cremation?

It is the question most people ask first, and the answer is reassuringly simple: it depends on the type of cremation you choose, not the provider alone. With individual (private) cremation you get your pet's own ashes back. With communal (shared) cremation, you generally do not.

In short

Choose individual (private) cremation and yes — your pet's own ashes are returned to you, commonly within a few days. Choose communal (shared) cremation and no — pets are cremated together and ashes are generally not returned. Ashes returned are confirmed for 134 of the 139 UK crematoria in our directory.

The short answer

It depends on the type of cremation

Whether you receive ashes back is decided by one choice: individual or communal cremation.

Individual (private): yes

Your pet is cremated on its own, so the ashes returned are your pet's alone. This is the option to choose if keeping the ashes matters to you.

Communal (shared): generally no

Several pets are cremated together and the ashes cannot be separated, so they are generally not returned. It is the lower-cost option — from around £30 for the smallest pets.

Timing

How long until the ashes come back?

It varies by provider. Among the 65 UK crematoria in our directory that publish a timeframe, ashes are commonly ready within a few days — from same-day options to about a week, with a handful quoting up to around 7–10 days. These are the providers' own published timeframes, quoted directly.

Aim to return within 24 hours; same-evening return possible if your pet arrives in the morning.

Fleur Fauna Pet Crematorium

Carmarthenshire, Wales

Often the same day or within a day or two.

Typically within 72 hours.

Typically ready within 2-5 days.

Standard service: ashes returned within 7 working days; same-day service returns them the same or next day.

Generally within a few days.

Timeframes usually begin once the crematorium has received your pet, so collection and weekends can add to the wait. If timing matters, ask whether a faster or same-day return is available and whether it costs more.

How they come back

Urns, caskets and scatter tubes

Ashes are returned in a container. What comes as standard, and what is an upgrade, differs between providers.

What's usually included vs extra

  • Usually included. A simple scatter tube or wooden box for the ashes — 68 of the UK crematoria we list state one is included in the price.
  • Usually an upgrade. A named or engraved urn, a wooden casket, or a scatter tube in a chosen finish.
  • Optional keepsakes. Paw prints, fur clippings, and ashes jewellery are typically priced separately.
  • Worth confirming. Ask what container is standard, and the cost of any urn or keepsake you would like, before you book.

Collection & return

How the ashes are returned to you

Once the cremation is done, there are three common ways your pet's ashes make their way back to you.

Collect them yourself

Many people collect their pet's ashes from the crematorium in person, which some find a meaningful step in saying goodbye.

Returned via your vet

If your vet arranged the cremation, the ashes are usually returned to the practice for you to collect there.

Delivered or hand-returned

Some providers post or personally deliver the ashes back to your home — ask whether this is offered and whether there is a charge.

Most UK crematoria we list also handle collection: 114 offer home collection and 118 collect from a vet. The ashes are often returned by the same route they were collected — so if a provider picks up from your home, they can usually bring the ashes back there too. Confirm how return works, and any fee, when you book.

Before you book

What to ask before booking

A few direct questions make sure you receive your pet's ashes exactly as you would like.

  • Is this an individual (private) cremation, so I receive only my pet's ashes?
  • How long will it take, and how will the ashes be returned to me?
  • Is a scatter tube or urn included, and what are the upgrade options?
  • Can I add a paw print, fur clipping or other keepsake?
  • Is there a charge for delivery, or for a faster or same-day return?

Questions

Pet ashes FAQ

Common questions about getting your pet's ashes back in the UK.

Will I get my pet's ashes back after cremation?

Yes, if you choose an individual (private) cremation — your pet is cremated on its own and the ashes returned are your pet's alone. With a communal (shared) cremation, several pets are cremated together and the ashes are generally not returned. If getting the ashes back matters to you, confirm the cremation is individual before you book.

How long does it take to get my pet's ashes back in the UK?

It varies by provider. Among the 65 UK crematoria in our directory that publish a timeframe, ashes are commonly ready within a few days — from same-day options to about a week, with a small number quoting up to around 7–10 days. Some providers offer a faster or same-day return, sometimes for an added fee. Confirm the timing directly with your provider.

Do you get ashes back from communal cremation?

Generally not. In a communal (shared) cremation the ashes of several pets are cremated together and cannot be separated, so no individual ashes are returned. If you would like your pet's ashes back, choose an individual (private) cremation instead.

How are the ashes returned to me?

Usually in one of three ways: you collect them from the crematorium yourself, they are returned to your vet if the vet arranged the cremation, or the provider delivers or posts them to you. Ashes typically come back in a simple scatter tube or wooden box, with a named urn, casket or keepsake available as an upgrade.

Is an urn included, or is it extra?

Often a basic scatter tube or box is included, with a named urn, casket or keepsake charged on top — 68 of the UK crematoria we list state that a scatter tube or urn is included in the individual cremation price. Because what is included differs between providers, ask exactly what container comes as standard and what the upgrade options cost.
